What to Do If a Funder Says Your Case Isn't Ready

Sometimes the right answer is to wait. Here's how to know when — and how to keep your case moving in the meantime.

Funders sometimes decline cases as 'not ready' rather than 'not fundable.' This usually means key documentation isn't in yet — medical records, expert reports, or initial liability investigation.

Talk to your attorney about what would change the answer. Often, waiting 60 to 90 days for additional medical treatment or documentation is enough to make a case fundable.

In the meantime, prioritize the bills with the worst consequences (housing, transportation, medical) and explore no-cost options (letters of protection, hardship arrangements with landlords).

When the case develops further, come back and reapply. AARC tracks reapplications and welcomes them.

We'd rather decline a case today and approve it later than approve a case that won't comfortably support the advance.
